Shouldcurrentguidelinesbechanged to requireage calibration fordiagnosisandclassificationofchronic kidney disease?—No. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public healthproblem, affectingmore than 10%of theworld’s population and more than half of adults older than 70 years.1 Chronic kidney disease is one of several conditions that are common in older people, such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, and are associatedwithan increasedriskofcardiovasculardisease.Like CKD, the criteria for defining and classifying these vasculardiseaserisk factorsdonotvarybyage,althoughage is important for assessing prognosis and determining treatment. The solution to thepublic healthproblemof CKD is to improve strategies for prevention and treatmentandtailor thesestrategies toeachpatient’sageand risk, rather than redefine CKD.
